Cumulative Volume Delta: calculation, divergence and coverage
Learn what CVD measures, how to interpret divergence from price and why positive delta is not automatically a crypto buy signal.

Cumulative Volume Delta, or CVD, accumulates a chosen measure of buyer-initiated volume minus seller-initiated volume. Its meaning depends on the venue, the classification of trades, the volume unit and the chosen reset point. It is not a count of how many people are bullish.
Calculate delta from executed trades
Bybit public-trade messages identify the taker side together with trade price and size. In a simple illustrative calculation, buyer-initiated volume of 120 units and seller-initiated volume of 90 units produce a delta of +30 units. Adding each interval delta creates a cumulative series. Choose base-asset volume or quote-value weighting consistently; changing the unit or reset point changes the chart and may change a visual comparison.
Read divergence as a question about price response
Positive delta means aggressive buying dominates the selected calculation, not that price must rise. If substantial buying meets enough passive selling, price may make little progress. Conversely, a relatively small flow can move through thin liquidity. When price and CVD diverge, inspect the location, activity and reaction. The divergence suggests a question about how orders are being absorbed; it does not identify the next candle with certainty.
Inspect feed gaps and market boundaries
A CVD calculated from one spot venue is not global crypto demand. Do not silently combine spot and perpetual data, quote currencies or incompatible units. A connection interruption can omit trades; a reconnect or session reset can create a discontinuity. Check the feed status and calculation window before comparing two charts. Missing observations should be marked as missing rather than replaced by zero-volume certainty.
Combine flow with structure and costs
Use a meaningful price area, a stated horizon and a separate invalidation condition. Compare completed trades with current liquidity, remembering that resting orders can be cancelled. For a proposed spot entry, verify the current executable spread and fees on the actual venue. HOSTuvo presents flow as an analytical layer alongside price and other context; CVD alone neither authorises an entry nor demonstrates a profitable strategy.
Choose an anchor and a unit before comparing CVD
CVD accumulates signed executed volume from a defined starting point. Changing that anchor changes the displayed level, so the level itself is not comparable across arbitrary chart resets. Base-asset units and quote-currency notional answer different questions and should not be mixed. Check the exchange's side convention and whether duplicates are removed. For analysis across venues, align the time windows and market types first. A spot series and a perpetual series can legitimately diverge without either calculation being wrong.
Hypothetical divergence without a guaranteed reversal
Across three windows, signed deltas are +20, +30 and +10 units, while successive highs stop at 100.0, 100.1 and 100.1. CVD rises by 60 units but price progress fades. This supports investigation of opposing passive supply, not an automatic short call. If the next window finally trades through that supply, the same prior buying may precede continuation. Record which subsequent observation would distinguish those possibilities. A divergence becomes useful through its context and a falsifiable condition, not through its visual appearance alone.
Avoid retrospective resets and incomplete comparisons
Freeze the CVD anchor used at decision time and retain it in the journal. Do not reset the series at a later low merely because the new curve fits a reversal story. Mark feed interruptions and verify that the sign of the data matches the intended aggressor convention. Compare price response at a stable level before changing the hypothesis. In a performance review, include divergences that never resolve and those that continue against the proposed direction; otherwise a compelling chart pattern can conceal substantial selection bias.
